History of the Fort Lauderdale Airport:
The Fort Lauderdale International Airport first opened in 1929 as the Merle Fogg Airport. During World War II it was commissioned by the United States Navy and renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. When the naval air station closed in 1946, ownership was transferred to the Broward County and the airport was renamed the Broward County International Airport. Later it was given its current name.

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is 1380 acres in size and it has three runways, 9000 feet, 6900 feet, and a 5200 runway that is being extended to handle larger aircraft. the airport has four terminals, three built in 1986 and one built in stages between 2001 and 2003. Common names for the terminals are: the "New Terminal" (Terminal 1), Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and the "International Terminal (Terminal 4).
