Coral Gables is a beautiful city near Miami Florida with tree lined streets, luxurious homes, inland waterways, historic buildings, and many gardens and parks.

HISTORY OF CORAL GABLES
It began as a carefully planned community founded by George Merrick in 1925. He had a vision of building a perfect Mediterranean style community and even today the town is famous for its aesthetic regulations. George Merrick began selling land in what would later be the city of coral Gables in 1921. Over the next few years he invested millions of dollars in building streets, inland waterways, foundations, golf courses, country clubs, and the Biltmore Hotel.

IMPORTANT CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Coral Gables is an important cultural center with a large number of theater performances, art galleries, and fine restaurants.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
That same year the University of Miami was built on 240 acres of land about two miles south of downtown Coral Gables.

DOWNTOWN AREA
The downtown area is a pedestrian friendly area four blocks wide and two miles long and a free trolley service transports shoppers up and down Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

FACTS:
Located about 4 miles from Miami International Airport. Population in 2005 was approximately 43,000 and the racial mix is about 90% caucasian. Incorporated city in Miami-Dade County. The schools in Coral Gables are part of the Miami-Dade School District, including Coral Gables High School.
