Venetian Pool of Coral Gables
South Florida
The spectacular Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, Florida
was orignally a quarry for mining the limestone used
to build homes in the area. In 1924 artist-architect
Denman Fink transformed the quarry into a swimming
pool that resembles a natural lagoon in a Venetian setting.
His design included bridges, towers, a casino, and
lush landscaping. Owner George Merrick sold the Venetian
pool to the city of Coral Gables in 1927. The pool
was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
on August 20, 1981.
